Slain's Castle ~ Cruden Bay

Eerie cries of crows perched atop gnarled trees lets you know your getting closer as you wind your way down the seemingly endless path. The sounds of ocean waves crashing against sharp rocks grows louder and louder. Suddenly in the distance, Slain’s Castle itself stands looming over the cliffs edge facing the North Sea. Erected in 1597 this is arguably one of Scotlands most famous castle ruins.

Slain’s is the work of Earl of Erroll who upon return from his exile made peace with King James VI and began construction of Slain’s castle. In 1664 Slain’s was altered and expanded with a corridor built across the courtyard. In 1836 further wings were added to the castle and a granite facing was added. With the massive expense it took to add to the castle and the luxurious lifestyle the Earl in 1916 was forced to sell it and leave.

In 1895 Bram Stoker visited Cruden Bay. He Stayed at the Kilmarnock Arms hotel where you can find his name still written in the ledger. His visit to Slain’s Castle was the inspiration for his famous novel “Dracula” which is still in print today. One visit to Slain’s yourself and you can see why. With it’s eerie underground chambers, tightly spiraling stone staircases, and maze of winding corridors inside this is the perfect medieval setting for a vampire tale.

If you decide to visit, beware of the cliffs edge. Many dogs and people have fallen right off to the rocks and ocean below. The castle sits right up against the cliffs edge and can be quite deceiving. With that said, this is hands down one of the best castles in Scotland! A must see for every Dracula lover, Travel enthusiast, and History buff! Enjoy!
